Anglers have seen good Morwong all down the coast from White Rock out of Kianinny to Boyd's Tower off Eden.
Snapper are also on the chew. Apart from soft plastics and micro jigs, pilchards remain the key bait to use.
Some lovely gummy shark have also been landed out from Cowdrys Beach at 14 fathoms together with some good size flathead. Once again pilchards are the go plus fresh slimy mackerel. Near Merimbula try Haycock Beach from the inside of the Horseshoe Reef.
Club officials said anyone heading out from Merimbula need to be cautious of the bar with conditions shifting almost daily.
Members said it was imperative to urge caution with entry and exit from Merimbula Lake.
In other fishing news, with the rising water temps, anglers are starting to catch some good whiting, try Fishpen and the Bega River flats using pumped nippers. The channels at Merimbula and Pambula are increasingly productive for bream, dusky flathead, flounder as well as tailor and trevally. For dusky flathead the DPI rules that they must be over 36cm to be legal and only one fish over 70cm may be kept. We recommend dusky flathead are truly a catch and release only species. Quantities are limited as our estuaries are not large and the big duskys, we all try to land, are the breeders. So kiss and release is the name of the game.
There are good tailor and Australian salmon in the Bega River, try silver spinners trolled in the main channel between the launching ramp and Thompsons. Similarly in the Merimbula channel between the bridge and the entrance. Best time is the start of the run in tide. Good estuary perch are in the Bega River down to Thompsons. With river temps up to 21 degrees dusky flathead and bream are well on the chew and some good size fish (catch and release) reported using soft plastics and glide lures.
The club remains poised to run a Covid safe Gala 2021.
This features the Gala fishing competition on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January. With free entry this competition is open to all; visitors and members alike and boasts a pool of 24 great prizes for anglers who donate their fish for the Monster Charity Auction in Spencer Park on the Sunday afternoon. With the town already fully booked for summer visitors the fishing competition and the Charity Fresh Fish auction look like being standouts for Merimbula in the New Year.
