The decorations have been gracing shops since the start of December, with empty shops, laneways, fences and gardens also decorated. Even the power poles are receiving special treatment with Christmas banners which required approval from the energy company and a cherry picker (thanks to Core) to install them.
If you walk around town, you might bump into one of the full size figurines such as an elves, reindeer or Santa which make great photo opportunities.
Venture inside some of the stores and discover the naughty elves who are getting up to mischief whilst trying to show off some of the products in over 30 speciality stores. The Naughty Elves competition is being run by the chamber and shoppers need to find six Naughty Elves around town and collect their names for a chance to win a share of $1000 in Merimbula dollars," chamber president Nigel Ayling said.
The highlight though is the 5m Christmas tree installed on the deck near Nosh.
Chamber member Kirsty Martin who has been helping to organise the decorations said it had taken an enormous amount of work to get the tree to Merimbula and erected and thanked all the local businesses who had been involved including Raging Bull, Fox Airconditioning, Sapphire Coast Electrical, Green Homes, Tasman Engineering, Purcell Welding and landlord Robert Green for letting the chamber place the tree on his property.
The Christmas sub-committee consisted of Kristy Martin, Jessica Porter, Kim Dorling, Ben Bell, Paula Benneian, Carmel Smith, Christine Farnham, Karen Brown, Garry Clarke, Tania Dwyer, Nathan O'Donnell, Kym Brookes.
"But it's not just the people involved, it couldn't have happened with out the financial support too. Special thanks to the Merimbula Special Events Committee for sponsoring the cost of the giant tree (the Special Events Committee gave $3000), and to Club Sapphire and Merimbula RSL for their support," Ms Martin said.
This Sunday, December 15 Merimbula will have its Christmas Shopping day from 11am-3pm. There are activities planned around town including a visit from Santa, who will be arriving on the back of a fire truck before heading to sit near the new tree for photo opportunities.
