Horror night of animal killings

Police and WIRES volunteers are calling for anyone with CCTV footage or any information relating to the killing of kangaroos and joeys at Tura Beach on Saturday evening, September 28.

WIRES volunteer Janine Green called it "carnage" after nine adult kangaroos and one joey were killed on The Dress Circle and a further seven kangaroos and one joey were killed on Headland Drive.

It is believed a vehicle was used to hit the animals sometime between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.

Police knocked on Ms Green's door at 1.30am on Sunday morning with a joey they had found in the pouch of one the slaughtered kangeroos.

"We're looking for CCTV footage and for eye witnesses. This is senseless slaughter, pure carnage. These people must have really low self-esteem to think that this makes them a hero," Ms Green said.

"I was very distraught to see one of the males this morning (Sunday) looking around for the the rest of the mob," Ms Green said.

One resident said that police had been going door to door on Sunday morning talking to residents. It is believed that some residents saw lights and some some a vehicle.

Photos have been taken of the slaughtered animals and the bodies have now been removed, Ms Green said.
