It was a heated clash, with some first-class football on display as both sides mustered some classy passages of play and polished set pieces.
Before things got physical, both clubs had come together to honour Paul Yelds, who was a well-respected member between both clubs and passed recently.
Blue Heelers president Colin Ryan shared some memories of Paul's time with the Blue Heelers before the large crowd stood for a moment of silence.
With the touching tribute out of the way, the field roared to life as both teams hammered at each other for possession and points.
The Bulldogs struck first and were awarded a penalty try after a quick offload saw Liam Beazley diving over, but the Heelers were called up on some push and shove just off the play.
Play settled and the Blue Heelers quickly worked their way back in, but the visitors had difficulty finding conversions after scoring on the fringes.
The Bulldogs built to a 14-8 lead at the break though both clubs had only scored a pair of tries each.
A Luke Rixon try in the second half established a lead for the Bulldogs, and later Trent Casey and Jake Mikula extended the margin - with those kicks fading wide.
However, a pair of late tries to the Blue Heelers brought them within just two points before the final siren sounded safety for the home team.
Earlier, the Blue Heelers had shown passages of brilliance to win the reserve grade after trailing Candelo-Bemboka 10-6 after the break.
It began with an 80-metre line break that sparked the Bombala attack into action, running in a further two late tries to win 22-10.
Meanwhile, the league-tag game was largely one-sided as the High Heelers ran away with the result over the Pink Panthers.
