The South Coast History Society are pleased to announce keynote speaker, Professor Spearritt of the University of Queensland to make an address at the South Coast History Day.
The 3rd annual all day seminar arranged by the South Coast History Society will be held at Club Sapphire, Merimbula.
This year’s theme ‘Our Pioneers…Their Heritage’ will focus on different aspects of the South Coast’s interesting history.
The South Coast History Society are thrilled professor Spearritt had chosen to attend the seminar.
“We are particularly thrilled that professor Spearritt has chosen to attend this seminar for two reasons,” president Peter Lacey said.
This year we also have speakers talking about air travel to the South Coast and a pioneering hydro-electric scheme that once operated on Gulaga
- Peter Lacey
“First, because he has an unusually strong interest in regional Australian history, so he will bring some interesting perspectives to our discussions throughout the day.
“And second, because he is something of an expert on what constitutes ‘heritage’, one of the themes of our seminar, having a written a paper on that exact subject,” he said.
Mr Lacey said the South Coast History Day has developed a reputation for attracting interesting presenters who cover a diverse range of topics.
“This year we also have speakers talking about air travel to the South Coast and a pioneering hydro-electric scheme that once operated on Gulaga (Mt Dromedary).
“Other discussion topics include early post offices, Australian war memorials within Australia and overseas, astounding museum exhibition disasters, challenges of teaching history to local kids, and a few other surprises.”
Professor Spearritt’s research interests have been unusually wide-ranging and have almost-exclusively concentrated on Australian history, Australian geography and Australian society.
