Hazardous surf warning for NSW South Coast

Hazardous surf conditions are expected off the NSW coastline Tuesday with rock fishers, swimmers, surfers, and recreational boat users all encouraged to exercise caution when in the water.

The warning is in place for coastal waters from Eden to Taree on the Lower North Coast throughout Tuesday and could potentially extend into Wednesday as forecast models continued to be refined.

It is anticipated that conditions will peak on the incoming tide which will be mid-morning on Tuesday.

Waves of in excess of three metres could be experienced in some areas with southern facing platforms and beaches expected to bear the brunt of the conditions.

Additionally strong coastal winds will impact the size and direction of the swell with choppy conditions highly likely.

NSW Lifesaving manager Matt du Plessis is urging the public to be aware of the changing conditions, and to not take the ocean for granted with most beaches unpatrolled during the week.

“If possible plan your visit at a patrolled location – check the BeachSafe website or with your local council for the latest list. Our emergency callout teams are able to respond to coastal emergencies, but it will take time for them to reach you,” said Mr du Plessis.

“We make no apologies for continuing to reinforce our safety messages as the ocean is an ever-changing, dynamic environment that needs to be respected.

"Some simple tips that are easy to incorporate into your day include checking the latest tide and weather forecasts, know your limitations, and always let others know your plans,” he concluded.

General Safety Tips During Hazardous Surf Conditions:

  • Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves
  • Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags.
  • Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities
  • Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket
  • If witnessing an in-water emergency dial Triple Zero – Police
