BVSC officers identified that the end of a leachate conveyance pipeline, which is used to transfer leachate from landfill cells to the leachate dam, had been removed from the dam.
As a consequence it is believed that approximately 5-10KL of leachate (5000-10,000 litres) was spilled on to a grassy area.
While the incident is not expected to have an impact on water quality, samples have been taken downstream of the site, which lies approximately 1.5km from Wolumla Creek.
The spill has been reported to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and council staff are undertaking a review of their procedures to prevent a similar incident occurring in the future.
