Good ocean flathead can be taken off Long Point at about 24 fathoms and remain on the chew at the usual spots off Bithrys, White Rock, Bournda Island and Tura Headland. Reef fish went completely off the bite last Sunday with anglers struggling to land even a wrasse! What was the reason, a drop in water temperature or that we were right beneath a localised high pressure system?
Large kingfish have been taken from Mowarry Point. Evening fishing at the northern end of Short Point Beach near Tura Headland has seen some excellent Australian salmon catches with salted pilchards a useful bait. Night fishing off Merimbula Beach at the sticks opposite the Airport is also seeing good salmon and large tailor.
At the Merimbula Fishing Platform, Australian salmon and tailor are providing excellent sport for locals and visitors alike! The luderick run seems to have expired although both luderick and drummer are available from the rocks at Merimbula, Short Point and Tura Headland. Usual baits are cabbage weed and cunjevoi. Rock fishing anglers are advised to wear life jackets, especially during heavy seas.
Pambula Lake remains hot with great trevally and tailor. In all, the estuaries dusky flathead as well as trevally, tailor and bream can be found. Soft plastics or burley and pilchards are the way to go. Bega River is best for bream but unfortunately Chinamen leatherjackets have swarmed into Merimbula Lake and anglers can find it almost impossible to get their baits to the bottom.
