A series of Directing workshops is being held in Merimbula at the Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre on Saturdays, January 21 and February 4.
The first workshop will give new directors the practical tools and techniques they need to prepare a short play for rehearsal. Each director will then have a week or so to plan and prepare and receive a one hour individual feedback and guidance session from the tutor.
At the second workshop, directors will cast and work with actors and technical crew in the rehearsal room, mentored by the tutor, before a rehearsed reading is performed at the end of the day at 5pm.
Workshop presenter Lis Shelley co-founded Footprint Theatre in 2009 and has written and directed plays at numerous Short+Sweet play festivals. Her last production "Slow Dating" resulted in a Runner Up Best Actor award for local Penelope Hunt at the 2016 Canberra Short+Sweet play festival.
"There are many actors out there keen to perform," Ms Shelley said.
"But it's harder for new directors to know where to start. The cost of travel and training in the cities is simply out of reach for many regional people. This approach allows Footprint Theatre to skill up the next generation of directors, giving them the confidence, tools and support they need to get a short play up and running, before they tackle a bigger project."
Successful participants may be offered the chance to direct a short play for public performance with Footprint Theatre at the end of March.
The workshop series - which includes 11 hours of tuition - costs $100 for non-members and $50 for Footprint Theatre members and is open to anyone aged 16 and above.
Actors with experience who would like to participate for free in the rehearsed reading are also encouraged to contact Footprint Theatre. For details see www.footprint.org.au or call 6495 7160.
