Live Below the Line is an annual anti-poverty campaign that runs throughout the month of May, which challenges participants to feed themselves on the equivalent of the extreme poverty line for five days.
The goal of Live Below the Line is to raise awareness by enabling participants to gain a small insight into some of the hardships faced by those that live in extreme poverty.
This term, Year 10 Food Technology students from Lumen Christi studied the impacts of global food inequity.
From this they were empowered to raise awareness of the issue within their local community.
“The students were particularly passionate about the link between access to education and a reduction of inter-generational poverty, specifically for girls and women in undeveloped countries around the globe,” teacher Jasmine Lefel said.
From this, the students decided that their team fundraising goal would be to raise at least $135.
This amount will fully fund a child’s education for three years as well as provide 12 students with textbooks for a school year.
The students were extremely creative with their meal plans and brought staple ingredients such as rice, bread, potatoes, pumpkin, oats and eggs to life with spices, herbs and sauces.
One student summed up the challenge with, “it’s been a really fun but difficult challenge and has made me more appreciative of everything we have at home and here at school”.
