Ric Wright of Tura Beach overcame a twoshot deficit to overhaul the leaders and win his second successive Far South Coast Veterans Golf Association 54 Hole Open Championship at Tura Beach Country Club on Friday, July 27, with a closing round of 39 points.

Home course advantage proved invaluable for local Tura player Ric Wright who moved up from fourth to win by two shots with rounds of 36, 36 and 39 for a total of 111 edging out Keith Cook (St Georges Basin) 39, 32 and 38 (109).
Ric scored a four-pointer on the second hole and another with a chip in on the 12th that proved the difference on the day. Ladies Open Winner was a very excited Sandra Gorny who was able to improve on each of her rounds and used local knowledge on her home course to finish with a final round 34, adding to her 29 and 31 for a total of 94, just edging out Edna Beech (25, 32, 36 = 93).
Ladies Open winner was Sandra Gorny, also a Tura member, whose closing round of 34 points gave her a one-shot victory over last year’s winner, Edna Beech of Tura Beach.
During the 12th Annual FSCVGA Week of Golf 86 golfers from 29 clubs throughout New South Wales, ACT and Victoria competed in near perfect weather.
On Sunday night at Tura Beach Country Club Tournament Director Bob Ward welcomed the players at a cocktail party where registration took place in readiness for a solid four days of golf. Monday saw players warm up with a 4BBB Medley Stableford and Men’s Single Stableford (in conjunction) at Pambula Merimbula Golf Club.
Battling superfast greens, Kevin and Elaine Cusack from Duntryleague Country Golf Club at Orange ran out winners. Runners up were Ross Shimmen from Curlewis GC and Alan Axford from Traralgon GC.
On Tuesday play continued at Eden for the first round of the 54 Hole S t a b l e f o r d Championships. Pin placements tested the skill and patience of all players.
Men’s Div 1 winner was Keith Cook (St Georges Basin), Div 2 winner Bob Audsley (Beverley Park) and Div 3 winner Ric Wright (Tura Beach). Ladies winners were Barb Rees (Tura Beach) and Div 2 Trish McCarthy (Liverpool).
Thursday’s play moved to Bega for Round 2 where players also contested the NSW Veterans Golfers Association Trophy.
NSWVGA Open 18 Hole Stableford Shield Winner was Brian Lyons (Liverpool) with an excellent round of 41 points and Ladies Open Winner was Helen Corby (Duntryleague) with an equally excellent 41 points.
Men’s Div 1 winner was Rob van Deyk (Tura Beach), Div 2 winner Don Parker (Moruya), Div 3 winner Jim Ward (Moruya). Ladies Div 1 winner was Edna Beech (Tura Beach) and Div 2 winner Barbara Studholme (Pambula Merimbula).
Friday’s final round was played at the Tura Beach Country Club in brilliant sunshine on a course sure to test Veteran golfers. At this stage 18 clubs had shared podium finishes and the test was who would put together three consistent rounds to be the eventual winners.
