A 29-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to his head and body in a shooting in Western Sydney about 9pm on September 13.
Mt Druitt Police Commander Steve Egginton told reporters the man was sitting in his car after returning home when a number of rounds were fired through the windscreen.
The man was hospitalised in a serious condition and a crime scene established on Niland Cres in Blackett.
Commander Egginton described it as an "ambush-style of attack" and said police hadn't established any links to other shootings, although the investigation was in its early stages.
It's the second shooting in as many days NSW Police is investigating after a man was shot in the head and chest in Campsie the previous evening.
The 27-year-old was taken to hospital in a serious condition and police found a Mercedes sedan ablaze a short time later.
In Victoria, police are also responding to another drive-by shooting, this time in Melbourne's north.
Two Craigieburn residents were woken about 12.10am on September 14 as shots were fired at their home, causing extensive damage.

The man and woman in their 50s were unharmed and police are investigating.
It follows the previous night's drive-by shooting which injured a teenager in the city's south-east.
The 17-year-old was sleeping when two rounds fired at the house went through his bedroom window.
He was taken to hospital in a stable condition with an upper body injury.
Victoria Police acting inspector Al Hanson said the teenager was extremely lucky to be alive.
A grey SUV was later found burnt out at a reserve in Narre Warren.
