Merimbula Basketball Club president Cliff Scarlett said he and all members of the Joint User Committee were ecstatic to see the works moving forward.
"The current committee that have got it across the line are ecstatic, there has been a lot of work in years gone by and a lot of people are excited about it," Mr Scarlett said.
Works will be carried out to resurface the existing courts as well as building an all-weather roof and an upgrade to the lighting infrastructure on the site.
The courts and surrounds encompass the basketball and netball clubs as well as the storage and operating site for the Merimbula Boardriders Club.
Mr Scarlett said the shared committee were given the option to control the tender and building process, but nominated to utilise the Bega Valley Shire Council's expertise in the project management of the upgrades.
"We've had a lot of meetings and to achieve the best result, we deemed that having council who do this as their bread and butter to project manage it," Mr Scarlett said.
"The scenario where we would project manage it wasn't the best, and we're confident we've made the best decision for council to push it forward on behalf of the town."
Mr Scarlett said he and others were ecstatic to see the upgrades nearing the build process, particularly given there is a short window for completion between the netball and basketball seasons.
Mr Scarlett said they would hopefully have a positive response to the tender process with options presented to council late in June with clubs hopeful the upgrades will begin in earnest in July.
"With the two seasons involved, it has a short window to complete, but we're really satisfied that this could become a wonderful community asset," Mr Scarlett said.
All three clubs involved have now formed part of a project control group including council and the State to ensure the delivered facility is in-line with the original plans provided for State funding.
Speaking on behalf of the Basketball Club, Mr Scarlett said he already received plenty of remarks from people eager to watch their children or grandchildren play at the upgraded facility.
Mr Scarlett believes it will be about a 12-week turnaround from the start date and hopes to see the upgrades completed around the end of September or start of October for the planned start of the summer basketball season.
