Inclusive basketball on the courts

The brain child of Sarah Maguire the club now holds a regular inclusive program.

"This program was instigated by Sarah and allows people with disabilities to play the amazing game of basketball," club president Cliff Scarlett said.

He said it was incredible to see the good work Ms Maguire was doing with kids, who otherwise might miss out on being able to take part in the sport.

Each Monday morning Ms Maguire hosts sessions for the kids, but Mr Scarlett said their sessions would be wrapping up soon for the year as the conditions get too hot for play.

"Unfortunately they only have a few weeks left as the weather is getting too hot, so bring on the roof we say," Mr Scarlett said.

Sarah will be ramping up the program in 2020 and will need help as the program grows.

Mr Scarlett said he hoped to see the program flourish as the "enthusiasm they have for the game and the smiles on their faces are inspiring".

In other club news, the Sharks were excited to announce Kelly Badewitz has been named the Basketball NSW Volunteer of the Year.

Ms Badewitz has been praised for her tireless efforts each week and club officials said it was excellent to see her exceptional work recognised.

Mr Scarlett said it was thanks to people like Ms Badewitz and previous Volunteer of the Year winner Kellie Graham that the club had been able to thrive, growing to about 400 members today.

The Sharks are currently enjoying their finals series before the summer break.

Matches are held on Friday afternoons from 4pm and junior games run Saturday mornings from 8am at the Merimbula courts.

Mr Scarlett said the competition was going well with the club's presentation night to be held at Club Sapphire on December 6 from 4pm.

All players this season are encouraged to take part.
