With benign weather conditions forecast for the coming weekend, Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club's inaugural Merimbula Billfish tournament is poised for a very successful start.

The event runs for three days; Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Fishing starts at 7am on Friday until 5pm each day until Sunday when it ceases at 3pm. Briefing for the tournament will be at the clubhouse on Thursday evening, March 21, doors open 6.30pm. Enquiries Peter Haar 0417 021 066.
Marlin, tuna and dolphin fish (mahi mahi) are anticipated to star in the tournament as well as mako and bronze whaler sharks.
Ocean flathead are back on the chew all along from Long Point to Tathra and further north. Try 17 fathoms off Bournda Island. Garfish and pilchards are excellent baits.
Reef dwellers morwong and snapper have been a little quiet but as the moon increases are expected to come back on the bite. Try Long Point, Haycock and Horseshoe Reef as well as Lennards Island and North Head off Eden.
Soft plastics loped along the bottom can bring good results as well as pilchard baits on a paternoster rig. Gummy shark are expected to be biting well along the reef edges. Sandy channels south of Haycock Point are worth trying, best results when anchored and trailing berley.
Off the headlands local anglers have landed some fine drummer using cabbage. Luderick, tailor and salmon are also available off the headlands. Beach salmon remain sporadic; best spots for beach salmon remain Main Beach at Merimbula, Haycock Beach and Aslings at Eden.
Luderick remain on the chew at Merimbula, best time the hour before dark. Frigate mackerel are seen occasionally at both the Tathra and Merimbula Wharfs together with the occasional kingfish. During the day anglers using bread berley attracted loads of mullet. A few calamari squid are available on dusk.
Trevally, bream and luderick are common about the oyster racks in Merimbula Lake. Try soft plastic lures flicked between the rows. Dusky flathead, flounder, bream, trevally, mullet and some garfish are available in the Merimbula channel.
At Pambula Lake good tailor, mullet, trevally and salmon are on the chew. Dusky flathead, big bream and whiting are all available at Mogareeka in the Bega River.
The clubhouse in Spencer Park will be open from 6.30pm on Friday, March 22. Visitors are very welcome. Come and enjoy the fishing report, the ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices.
