“Turn & ReTurn” is the first new body of work released by mandolinist Plumb after 12 years touring with the cult acid-croft hypno-folkadelic band Shooglenifty.
Friday’s Candelo performance will feature Melbourne jazz virtuosos Eamon McNelis on trumpet and Justin Olsson on drums, and local heroes Kate Burke on guitar and Robyn Martin on bass.
“I’m so excited to bring this band to my home town,” Burke said. “Luke has a fantastic mind for musical creativity, and it’s all about the groove. The way the mandolin and trumpet work together is something to behold.”
Conceptualised while walking home from a session in Edinburgh, Scotland, Turn & ReTurn is a bold release defying boundaries of genre. Drawing on 15 years of musical interactions from around the world, Plumb’s compositions are grounded in traditional musics, and driven by dance rhythms.
Turn & ReTurn is the fifth album Plumb has worked on with revered Scottish folk industry icon Calum Malcolm (The Go-Betweens, Mark Knopfler, Stephane Grapelli, Capercaillie) as a producer, co-producer, mixing and mastering engineer.
“Enough imagination and originality to inspire a new generation of local folk musicians. The result … is an album of breathtaking originality,” said Bruce Elder of The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.
Luke Plumb and the Circuit will be at the Candelo Town Hall Friday, July 20, for the Candelo Arts Society’s Music and Variety Night. Doors open at 7.30, tickets at the door $20 full/$15 members. Kids under 12 free.
