There were some really tough five-game matches and a few somewhat easier 3-0 results, but it wasn’t until the last couple of encounters that the night’s outcome became clearer. Great matches between Sophie and Bec (3-2), Tanisha and Ben (0-3, but all games so very close), Hagen and Geoff (3-2) and Matt and Rob (3-2) saw John Ziino’s team hold a welcome lead as the last two matches took to court. Ultimately, it was John Ziino’s team that won through with John and his number two both winning their matches 3-0 to seal the deal.
Club President Matt Fanning, said the “the comp was noteworthy for many new and enthusiastic players, like the highly under-graded Ryan Mariott and his determined partner Natasha Sconfienza, not to mention the happy medic, Gina Tsai.”
He also welcomed the return of some quality past players, notably Phil Cottrell and Andy High, as well as Bombala’s Jason Vincent, back for his second season after a long layoff.
Fanning also thanked ALDI – the new owners of the squash club building – who are letting the club keep the courts until the building is demolished, while the club is waiting on construction of new indoor courts at the Aquatic centre.
There is a short break before the club heads into the next competition early in August. There are social and grading nights on July 18 and 25. Or for more info, contact Matt Fanning 0429 995 220 or Alex Wakeford 0401 544 671.
