Weighed in at an outstanding 436.2kg, it is the world’s second largest swordfish ever landed.  

Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s annual Open Yellowfin Tournament will be in action this coming weekend.  Fishing opens on Saturday at 7am and runs during daylight hours until 3pm on Monday. 

Doors open at the Spencer Park Clubhouse at 6.30pm on Friday for entries with a competition briefing at 8pm. 

The forecast is fine and there are 60kg yellowfin being taken off the shelf already, officials said the tournament looks to be on track for a successful weekend. 

Lots of prizes are available for entrants all thanks to the Clubs sponsors both local and interstate business.  This year there will be prizes for capture, tag and release and most meritorious, with 16 categories overall up for grabs including juniors and ladies.  

The Tournament Dinner will be held at the Tura Beach Country Club at 6.30pm on Sunday.

The trophy and prize presentation will be held at the Spencer Park Clubhouse on Monday. The Presentation will be at approximately 5pm. Refreshments and finger food will be available from 4pm.

In regular news, good ocean flathead are on the chew southeast of Turingal Point, try 16 fathoms and the usual spots off Bithrys, Bournda Island and Tura Headland. 

Morwong and snapper remain a staple off the reefs such as Long Point and Haycock, but weather conditions over the past week have kept most anglers inshore.  Active reef areas include White Rock out from Kianinny, Horeshoe, Lennards Island, North Head, Boyds Tower and Mowarry.  

Good salmon are gracing Haycock Beach, while salmon are also reported from Tura Beach as well as Aslings at Eden. 

At the Merimbula Fishing Platform excellent Calamari squid respond to slow sinking jigs, try just after dark and dawn.

The estuaries are cooling but without significant rain dusky flathead as well as trevally, tailor & bream remain on the bite. 

There are also reports of good whiting in the Fishpen area of Merimbula Lake.  Soft plastics and squirt worms are the way to go. 

With the Bega River closed Mogareeka is the best place to try as fish congregate closer to the salt water.

The Club is open at the Spencer Park clubrooms every Friday from 6.30pm. Visitors are very welcome.
