This year’s zone cross country remained a tough one at the Wolumla Recreation Ground on Friday, May 11.
Spectators and competitors visiting from Eden to Bermagui gave the weather a huge thumbs up. The terrain was at it’s best for the 11 schools of the Far South Coast.
Flynn Cook of Bega Valley Public School was thrilled with his first cross country experience.
Lucky to maintain first position in the 8/9 year division, he said “I had to ask at one of the check points where to go next.”
Heidi Smith of Pambula Public School was no surprise, taking the win for the 8/9 year girls division.
“It was hard, but easier than last year,” she said.
“When I started I felt good, I heard people yelling which gave me confidence and I didn’t stop.”
The 12/13 boys worked hard to catch Sam Cridland of Wolumla who was hot off the startline.
Training paid off for Eden sports star Jack Caldwell, taking the lead with a strong first place finish followed by Sam in second.
Despite a niggling knee injury, Jack managed to smash his personal best by 40 seconds.
First place at the regional championship is now in Jack’s sight as he said “the kid who normally beats me has gone to high school, so I really hope to get first.”
After a massive effort, first place in the 12/13 girls division was achieved by Kirra Turner of Tathra Public School.
“It was very hard, the two girls were right behind me but I had to stop because I had a really dry throat. But then I kept running until the end,” Kirra said.
Cross country winners now look towards competing at the regional championship held at Cooma in June.
