Game fishing off Merimbula has continued its good run with striped marlin tagged and released, generally along the first drop-off at 70 fathoms. There are reports of large kingfish from Mowarry, Boyd’s Tower, Lennards, Haycock and Long Point although not in large numbers.

Following on from Anzac Day, this season’s first burst of cooler weather saw a brief slowdown in local angling, but an influx of snapper has kept anglers happy. Catches of snapper and morwong from our local reefs including Long Point, Haycock, Lennards Island and Mowarry continue, particularly those areas sheltered from the SW winds. It is certainly good to see the arrival of more snapper as the club’s Tackle World Snapper Classic approaches for the weekend of May 26-27.
Ocean flathead remain on the chew at the usual spots off Bithrys, White Rock, Bournda Island and Tura Headland however returns are low due to the strong winds and cut-offs due to patches of oceanic green toads (smooth golden puffer fish) and chinamen leatherjackets. Try at 15 fathoms off Tura Golf Course and 21 fathoms of Bithry’s.
It’s a good time for beach fishing when the SW winds set in. For salmon, try the gutters near Bournda Island, also the Headland, Short Point, Haycock and Aslings beaches. Good returns can come using three-ganged hooks presenting a whole pilchard. After dark remember to use a wire trace as there are some large tailor on the prowl.
At the Merimbula Fishing platform there have been some great days for calamari squid. There is also plenty of bait fish, mainly yellowtail and slimy mackerel and the occasional kingfish.
Good fish remain on the chew in our estuaries and water temperatures remain mild. There are fine dusky flathead as well as bream and even snapper.
Flounder remain on the chew in Merimbula Lake together with trevally and bream. There is a large amount of anchovie bait fish in the lake and this keeps tailor busy providing anglers excellent sport. All you need is a silver spinner. Large blue swimmer crabs remain abundant.
At Pambula there are good bream and trevally along the drop-off near the shark hole. Try Pambula Broadwater for dusky flathead and the entrance for salmon. The Bega River continues to give good bream up river and dusky flathead and whiting at Mogereeka.
Hosted this year by the Pambula Fishing Club, the Tri Club “Grudge Match” (Merimbula, Pambula and Eden clubs) is being held this coming weekend, starting at 4pm on Friday, May 4, and finishing at 12pm on Sunday, May 6. Pambula will host a BBQ at their clubhouse, landing road, Broadwater starting at 1pm Sunday followed by the points tally & presentation. This is a popular event and can be a good warm-up for the annual Merimbula Snapper Classic to be held later on May 26-27. The Club is open every Friday evening commencing 6.30pm.
