I live in Dolphin Cove with the bush behind my home. I maintain a 5-6 metre break behind my house because after numerous calls to the council and also speaking directly to the chaps that sit on the mowers trying to get them to mow behind my place, nothing happens. My neighbour rang the council and asked them prior to the fires to come and reduce the undergrowth and they stated they would look into it. Still nothing.
If a bushfire was to go through Tura Beach Or Mirador it would be catastrophic. We need to open the road from Mirador to Tura Beach Drive and also Berrambool Drive.
Dolphin Cove is at risk and we need to give the green advocates who say there are potential potoroo habitats a wet hessian bag and say go help put out the fire then see how it impacts on everyone else.

Looking ahead
Dear Mick Keelty AO APM,
I am concerned at the lack of reporting/attention being given to the fire in Berrambool Drive Merimbula, put out by pure good luck before it had time to take hold. I understand it was noticed by the local brigade on its way to the Tathra fires.
What would have happened if the local brigade was half an hour’s drive away, and what back-up is planned in a scenario such as this in future? Looking at Google space photo it clearly shows if this particular fire had got out of control, Merimbula, Mirador Estate and Tura Beach could have experienced the same fate as Tathra?
What responsibility should vacant land owners, councils, government departments have to make fire preventive clearing?
Praise for our emergency workers/volunteers who should receive adequate funding to protect their communities.
Ron Douglas, Tura Beach
Health issue
I am not surprised at Tony Allen’s voting against the motion of writing to Health Minister Hazzard. But I am disgusted that he is still a staunch Bega town supporter and as a BVSC councillor not representing the welfare of the entire Bega Valley Shire, especially when it comes to health!
The pre-election meetings regarding the Pambula Hospital that was promised by Mr Constance together with then NSW health minister Jillian Skinner, and Mike Kelly, even promising “an ironclad guarantee” from the then Labor Federal Health Minister. The lies and broken promises still hinder the future for Pambula Hospital.
These MPs win our votes to be re-elected and let the voting public down each time. Dr Kelly a staunch Bega supporter showed his true colors when he helped Bega Cheese obtain a carbon tax rebate, the first in the country, and the procurement of the regional hospital. His promises for the future for Pambula Hospital were left for dead!
I would like the BVSC to also write to Mr Constance and Dr Kelly, they should be involved in this predicament they have caused. Writing to Health Minister Hazzard is a start, let’s hope that a decision is not made by a shuffling paper bureaucrat with no history of the promises made.
Mr Constance should be encouraged to speak to the Health Minister directly for us....he knows the story very well.
I sincerely thank all the councillors who voted to help this area retain the Pambula Hospital for all residents and tourists.
Barb Aggenbach, Merimbula
Thanks for help
I would like to thank the ambulance and fire rescue teams who came to my rescue on Tura Beach. While on my walk on the beach I collapsed with low blood pressure and dehydration. I would also like to thank Phillip, who called triple zero, and the chap with his dog called Hungry. Both were great help getting me off the beach and to the care of the professionals.
