Mr Stevens is the organiser of the annual Giro d’Canberra, a 130km bike ride around Canberra’s Stromlo Park with proceeds going to charity.
He’s been running it four about four years, but is now eager to see some familiar faces from the coast take part.
And a big boost to that is being able to select where charity proceeds can go.
“The big change this year is you can nominate which charity you want to ride for,” Mr Stevens said.
“We thought there was room on the calendar for another big ride in Canberra and the main aim is about getting out to make some money for charity.”
The ride will go ahead on May 20, but Mr Stevens said online entries were open now.
He said there was a huge following of cyclists around the Bega Valley, but encouraged everyone to swap their mountain bike for the weekend.
“It's a great road for riding and some very nice scenery, but it’s definitely also a nice challenge.
“It’s a different experience to try if you’re into the mountain biking.
“Whether you're in it for a fun day out, or to achieve a personal best, make every second on the course count by fundraising as part of your ride.”
Unlike the single track in Tathra and Mandeni, Mr Stevens said the ride was distinctly a road event, but it would still provide a wonderful challenge with some sweeping bends and strenuous climbs.
There is 2500m of elevation across the course.
There will be support vehicles on hand to ensure riders’ safety on the course as well as food and water stops along the circuit.
Mr Stevens said it is a big trip to make for a bike ride, but there were accommodation packages available at discount rates.
There is also the opportunity to win a free stay with four double accommodation passes (up to $500 in value) to be won by anyone registered before April 30 through the TFE chain of hotels.
“Register before that deadline and you could win a free night of accommodation – and if you’ve already booked accommodation – the vouchers are valid for 12 months in Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Stevens said.
Registrations are online. Entries are $120 and can be found at http://girodcanberra.gofundraise.com.au. You can also get more event details at the website or search for the girodcanberra Facebook page.
