Contested in Adelaide last weekend, Kiarna topped the under 16s division, hurling her javelin 44.88 metres to win on her first attempt – almost two metres shy of her personal best.
Her best is 46.35 metres, thrown at the Combined Cathloc Colleges athletics championships in September, where she crushed the previous record by almost seven metres.
“I was stoked to make the NSW team,” Kiarna said. “I got to travel and stay with the team in Adelaide and made some great new friends.”
Kiarna thanked coach Malcolm Lavender, who made the trip to Adelaide to watch her compete, and said she was stoked her hard work had paid off, knowing she competed against some of Australia’s best.
“We are obviously really proud of what Kiarna has been able to achieve - the smile on her face on the podium said it all,” proud parents Kylie and Michael said.
She’s had a week off after the competition and she’s straight back into training for the Australian Junior Championships in March (Sydney) – where she will compete with the ACT team (!). She has a couple of big goals ahead and hopefully lots to look forward to.
Kiarna would like to also take this opportunity to thank all the individuals and businesses that supported her Canadian Athletics trip.
She was invited alongside Mattee Scott to compete at the prestigious Canadian athletics event.
Despite facing some strong international competition, Kiarna proved a dominant force and was able to claim six medals during her trip.
She was eager to thank Subway Merimbula (Leigh and Larry Seeley for very generously hosting a fund raising night).
