Approximately 100 children are submitted to the South East Regional Hospital in Bega each year.
Bailey’s aim is to provide 100 bags filled with goodies to put a smile on their face and make their hospital visit brighter.
Bailey’s project ‘Smiles for kids’ was inspired by his sister, Paris Martin aged 14, who has a rare condition called Marfan Syndrome.
Paris lives in a world of hospitals, her condition is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue, restricting her to participate in most sports an activities.
Proud mother, Carla Harris has been helping to support Bailey’s initiative and is thankful for the donations that have been received so far from local businesses and community members.
“There are boxes of stuff all over the lounge room, although he is still in need of items such as drink bottles, hats, word search books and things for the older kids,” Ms Harris said.
Bailey has tailored bags to suit each age group, colouring-in books and crayons for younger children – drink bottles and word search books for older children.
There is one thing that Bailey wishes to add into all of the bags – a comforting teddy bear.
“I would like to include a bear in every bag, which costs a little bit of money,” he said.
Bailey has a gofundme page set up to receive donations that will go towards the purchase of the bears.
“A cuddle from a soft teddy bear is the perfect comfort to put a smile on sick children’s face,” said Ms Harris.
Bailey has currently reached halfway to reach his goal of $1000.
