On the weekend we saw the annual motorcycle toy run make its way from both ends of the shire to Bega, adding their collected toys and gifts to our Christmas Toy Drive.
What the relatively small group of bikers are able to achieve thanks to club members and the community is wonderful.
When added to the growing piles under the Merimbula News Weekly and Bega District News offices Christmas trees, the result is awe-inspiring, and causes not a little emotion among the staff here.
This is the fourth year we’ve held the toy drive and never has the outworn cliche “this year is bigger and better” been more appropriate.
The donations from a loving, caring and generous community continue to flow in, with the pile of gifts guaranteed to put a smile on countless children’s faces on Christmas Day – and perhaps a choked-back tear to those closest.
Through our partnership with the local branches of the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Anglicare, these treasures gifted by you will be placed in the hands of those who need them most. And for that we are truly thankful.
As further evidence of this community’s boundless generosity is this week’s official opening of the carers accommodation at the South East Regional Hospital.
The Community Carers Accommodation South East project has, in five short years, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
From local students donating the proceeds from a lunch cook-off, to the Pambula Rotary chipping in with $50,000, every corner of our community has had input to this worthy project.
To put a dollar figure on your commitment to the carers accommodation may sound a little crass. But when you consider that it’s at least $500,000 – and that’s not including Bega Cheese and Bendigo Bank signing on as corporate sponsors with significant contributions – you start to appreciate what this community can achieve.
For all those who have in some way contributed to this project, Friday afternoon’s open house will definitely be of interest.
