For a long while the only Southern Bluefin we have heard of were 180-200km offshore and only falling to longliners. Fish at the shelf come within range of local and visiting game anglers.
The full moon has seen gummy sharks (flake) active again and some wonderful fish are responding to squid and pilchards at reef edges. There are good snapper and morwong off Boyd’s Tower near Eden as well as the usual marks at Haycock, and Long Point near Merimbula and White Rock out of Kianinny. These all respond to soft plastics or a paternoster rig also with squid or pilchards.
At all the usual flathead marks off Tura Beach, Bournda, White Rock, Kianinny and Bithry Inlet, flathead remain tentative. Depths of 18 to 25 fathoms give results but large fish are few and far between. Watch out for voracious schools of Couta.
In the Merimbula Lake there is some activity in the lower reaches with schools of anchovies and silver bream coming in from the ocean. Tailor and trevally are active in the top lake and some blue swimmer crabs have started moving around. There are reports that mud crabs are also coming out in the upper reaches like Muddy Creek.
At Pambula, schools of salmon are reported from the Broadwater. With the Bega River closure we can expect great angling at Mogareeka and this is a great opportunity to practice catch and release.
