Imlay House Auxiliary
The auxiliary would like to thank all those who came along to our Pambula Cream Tea last Wednesday, August 16. It was a resounding success with all proceeds going to the Imlay House Nursing Home. Fun was had by everybody, with much laughter at Jackie's "silly game", trivia and bingo, plus a lovely afternoon tea. The raffle was won by Jane Adams, much to her delight and brought another successful fund-raising effort to a close. Again, thanks must go to those who worked so hard to make the afternoon the success it was. Now we must all look forward to the Spring Fever lunch, more about that later.

Our History, Our Heritage
Bega Valley Shire and the NSW Department of Environment and Heritage are organising a major “Heritage Near Me” Week in early September, and Merimbula has been chosen as the venue for the first event.
This first event will be an informative “Our History, Our Heritage Day’ which is being presented by the South Coast History Society at Club Sapphire on Saturday, September 2. The seminar has unexpectedly received significant government support that has led to ticket prices being slashed by 50 per cent to just $10, including lunch and afternoon tea.
The Our History, Our Heritage Day has been organised by the South Coast History Society to highlight interesting aspects of the local area’s history and heritage.
“We are thrilled that an event that was designed as a local event has attracted such a high level of interest and support,” South Coast History Society’s president Peter Lacey said.
“We have engaged an exceptional line-up of speakers, headed by Dr Anna Clark from the University of Technology Sydney who will be speaking on how history should be shared and how history should be taught.”
Our History, Our Heritage Day will be held in the Sapphire Room at Club Sapphire Merimbula. It starts at 10.20am and runs through to 4.45pm.
“Because we are providing lunch and afternoon tea to those who attend, pre-purchase of tickets is absolutely essential and no tickets will be available at the door on the day,” Peter advised.
Tickets should be booked through the South Coast History’s new website www.southcoasthistory.com or by phoning 0448 160 852.

Writers add polish at workshops
Following up on this year’s Winter Writers Retreat at Kianinny, two regular mentors, Amanda Midlam and Paula Boer, returned to run workshops for the Writers of the Far South Coast. The creativity nurtured during the weekend in the wilderness now needed polish.
In preparation for her workshop, Paula Boer read up to 20,000 words from 10 manuscripts to provide each writer a personalised structural edit. This type of editing is not concerned with grammar or spelling but involved examining the plot, theme, character and point of view to ensure they were logical and remained consistent. During her all-day workshop at Tura Marrang Library, Paula offered suggestions and exercises to strengthen each story.
Writer Greg Barlett remarked, “An excellent day. Every aspect of Paula’s workshop was constructive and uplifting. I feel I have been given specific ways to improve my manuscript to be more marketable for industry standards.”
A week later, Amanda Midlam’s afternoon workshop at Club Sapphire included exercises on word choice and pace. David Thomas, said Ms Midlam’s workshop was “Encouraging and informative. I welcomed being given a second opinion on points of concern.”
The Writers of the Far South Coast hold monthly manuscript clinics where 1,500-2000 words are read and the writers themselves provide the peer feedback. Each is followed by an afternoon workshop and in September, the WFSC will host Jeff Apter as he explores the topic of ghostwriting. If you’re interested in writing about the lives of others, this workshop is for you. For more information call (02) 6448 9948, visit www.writersfsc.org.au or find the WFSC on Facebook.
