Fencing in place since 2012, around the old Mobil site in Merimbula will be moved before Christmas following the installation of street furniture, made of reclaimed wooden girders from the Tathra Wharf.
Council said site at the intersection of Market and Monaro Streets, had been fenced for public safety reasons.
Terry Dodds, director transport and utilities said the site’s history meant council needed to find a special treatment for the site, which included hard sealing the area in order to open the space to the community.
“The works will tie in with the opening of some new businesses adjoining the land,” Mr Dodds said.
If work on those businesses is not finished, the fencing may be moved back around the shops. He added that the works are temporary and a more permanent solution was being developed as part of the broader bypass project.
“The Merimbula bypass is on track for completion in the second half of 2017 which brings together the ambition we all share which to see the town thrive,” Mr Dodds said.
