Councillor Robyn Bain has apologised for comments made recently on social media, but called any investigation into her conduct "political correctness gone feral".
She offered her public apology at Wednesday's council meeting, saying "with the benefit of hindsight" she should have "kept her thoughts to herself and sucked it up" rather than telling community volunteer Amanda Midlam to "get a life".
The exchange on the Eden Magnet Facebook page surrounded questions over Hotel Australasia and Cr Robyn Bain’s motion putting the future of the hotel back out to expressions of interest from private developers.
On Facebook, Eden’s Australasia community group member Amanda Midlam asked why past decisions about the hotel had to be reversed.
In response, Cr Robyn Bain said: “Go get a life Amanda. If you spent as much time in the community doing good stuff as you do in Facebook you would be productive. Go talk to the people of Eden. Stop hiding behind a computer. You believe you are right? Stand for council next time.”
It’s understood BVSC general manager Leanne Barnes has received two emails complaining about the councillor’s conduct and she was poised to investigate.
However, at Wednesday’s public meeting, Cr Robyn Bain said she believed the matter didn't warrant investigation and questioned the cost of review.
She offered to cover any cost rather than having ratepayers “burdened by an overly bureaucratic process”.
“When the bill comes in, pass it to me,” she said.
