A packed public gallery witnessed the election of new mayor for Bega Valley Shire Council, Kristy McBain and the deputy mayor, Liz Seckold.

Councillors McBain and Tony Allen were both nominated for mayor with Cr McBain receiving six votes to Cr Allen’s three. Cr Seckold was unopposed as deputy mayor.
This council needs to get on with the job and have nine councillors working together.

In speaking prior to the election which was by open vote at the suggestion of Cr Russell Fitzpatrick, Cr McBain said that gender didn’t matter.
“I am the change, the new voice. We need to deliver especially for the Port of Eden; we haven’t even started there.”
Cr McBain said that Merimbula Airport was even more important now that there was an international airport just three hours away.
“We are on the cusp of big changes here. I will be the can do mayor,” she said.
Cr Allen spoke about his experience on council and the support he has received from the electorate for the third time running.
Cr Seckold reiterated her support for the financial position taken by the previous council.
