Reminiscent of the “Old Tom” days at Eden, anglers on the Merimbula fishing platform were astounded to see a pair of magnificent killer whales - Orca - swim past the platform and frolic in Merimbula Bay late last week. Locals tell us it is not usual but certainly not uncommon.
There are few reports of reef activity, apart from some morwong off Long Point. Cool currents inshore continue to make bottom dropping slow with catches few and far between, including ocean flathead. Beach salmon remain patchy, best areas North Tura and Main Beach. Excellent drummer remain about the headlands.
Tailor are schooling all through the estuaries including Merimbula Lake and on Main Beach. Merimbula Lake has returned a few dusky flathead best using soft plastics.
Bream remain active well upstream in the Bega River. Soft plastics, hard bodies and peeled prawns remain the best baits.
The Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club is hosting its annual Sponsors Evening on Saturday, September 3, 6.30pm.
