Sapphire Coast Rotaract has teamed up with Pambula Rotary to provide a free tutoring service to local high school students.
The Study Buddies program was started last year by Rotaractor Jillian Riethmuller but was unfortunately put on hold while Ms Riethmuller spent some time in Indonesia. However, now it’s back and should be better than ever.
While last year Ms Riethmuller was the only tutor available this year there are three confirmed tutors with others willing to help out on a casual basis.
They will be able to help students with most subjects including science, English, history and mathematics but they will also be available to help children with creating a resume and filling out job applications.
Ms Riethmuller says the program started due to Sapphire Coast Rotaract’s desire to help the youth in the community.
“We received a grant last year to help with mentoring and educating young students and we know tutoring can be expensive,” she said. “Students shouldn’t be disadvantaged purely because they can’t afford to get the extra help they need.”
The Sapphire Coast Rotaractors are university graduates with degrees in English literature and politics as well as marine science and science communication. They will be working with members of Pambula Rotary who have qualifications and experience in teaching mathematics.
The Rotaractors are hoping that because they are relatively young they will be able to relate well with the students.
The tutoring will take place in Merimbula at the new Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre on Wednesday afternoons starting next week, Wednesday June 1.
While the tutoring is free, students are asked to bring a gold coin donation to go towards room hire. Bookings are essential to ensure each child is given enough one on one attention. To book simply email sapphirerotaract@live.com or call 0467 984 616.
Sapphire Coast Rotaract is also very welcoming of new members. Rotaractors are students and young professionals aiming to create positive change in the local community. Find them on Facebook to get involved.
