The return of squash to Merimbula wrapped up with the Autumn competition finals last week.
Following the rejuvenation of the old courts back in summer, the 10-week comp proved to be popular with a great mix of players – new and past, young and old, experienced and learner, family and friends.
Dean Smith’s team six led strongly throughout the 10-week season, and they faced off against John
Zinno’s team, who finished a tidy second.
However, both teams scraped through by just a game or two in the semi-finals and it could have easily been third and fourth place going through to the grand final.
Two 3-0 whitewashes gave team six the ideal lead before Dean secured a 3-1 win over Zinno.
Marsha then overcame the quickly-improving Jeremy to give team six an unassailable lead after the four matches.
Another big improver, Kay Malone, was too strong for the determined Ashlee.
Team two then enjoyed some late success with Kirk cleaning up Braydon 3-0 before Mitch Nadin and Julie Graham took to the court for the final match.
It proved to be one of the closer and more entertaining matches of the night. At times Mitch was really firing, especially towards the umpire, but it was the tall, composed and precise Julie who prevailed 3-1.
The club is now looking forward to social grading nights on Wednesday and May 25 from 6pm, while the popular calcutta will run on May 27 from 5.30pm.
