Originally developed in England, panto is a musical comedy, based around a nursery rhyme or children's story and is designed for family entertainment. Traditionally it involves songs, slapstick and always includes a couple of "ugly sisters" who are men dressed as women, in this case Sam Roberts and John Fraser both of whom did a great job, complete with big hair, plenty of eye makeup and lipstick and some very lurid dresses.
There was plenty of audience participation as large spiders descended on the unwitting ugly sisters who demanded to know where they were hiding. The traditional cries of: "They're behind you" rang out as children and adults entered the into the spirit of the panto.
The show runs until May 30, details and tickets are available at www.spectrumtheatregroup.com.au.
