Merimbula has made it into the Lonely Planet’s East Coast Australia guide book and in Lonely Planet’s inimitable style the town centre has been labelled “rather unappealing”.

Lonely Planet’s top choices for New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory are among the highlights of its new East Coast Australia Travel Guide, published this month.
Four authors have researched and written this fifth edition of the guide which covers the east coast from Cairns to Melbourne.
The description for Merimbula states: “Spread around the top end of a long, golden beach and an appealing inlet (which locals insist on calling a lake), Merimbula is in thrall to holidaymakers and retirees. The rather unappealing town centre plays second fiddle to the rather pretty inlet and surrounds. In summer, this is one of the few places on the far South Coast that really gets crowded.”
The Boardwalk gets a big tick from the reviewers at Lonely Planet who urge visitors not to miss “this gorgeous addition to the town’s natural highs.” They also highlight whale watching and and wildlife around Merimbula as well as pointing to a number of activities that can be enjoyed locally such as diving, stand up paddling, kayaking and cycling.
Meanwhile Bermagui has been described as "a pretty port", Tathra "a sweet little beach town" Eden "a sleepy place "with the exception of the wharf area,and Narooma "one of the prettiest places along the coast."
