The Club drew the middle barrier as part of the Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep that gives 24 Cup Tour destinations across Australia the chance to win big for charity.

The town sweep which draws the barrier of the Cup-winning horse will be presented with a cash prize of $50,000 to put towards a nominated charity for a local community initiative.

Sapphire Coast Turf Club nominated the Social Justice Advocates as its charity of choice to put towards their campaign to tackle homelessness in the Bega Valley Shire.

Although the $200,000, 18-carat gold cup did not get to physically make its way to Bega in September due to the pandemic, it instead appeared virtually via a livestream link in late August.

The town sweep was hosted online on Tuesday October 26 at 11am where the barrier was drawn.

"We have our fingers crossed for barrier 14," said sponsorship and marketing coordinator Jess O'Donnell.

"Our president Robyn Bain suggested them [Social Justice Advocates] because she's a Bega Valley Shire councillor and deals with them a lot.

"They can't get their caravans out to help people with crisis support housing fast enough," she said.

Chairman of the Social Justice Advocates Michael Brosnan said it was fabulous the Club had selected them as their charity of choice.

"I think the issue of homelessness strikes everyone at some stage, so it's really fabulous that they've considered us," he said.

"We're nearly at $80,000 already for our It's Up To Us campaign to buy a two-bedroom unit to house people in need, and it's going to cost a lot because the prices go up by the day.

"The Bega Valley Shire community is very generous, in only three or four months we've nearly raised $80,000 and the campaign hasn't even had the opportunity to run its events yet.

"I'm not a betting man myself, but my grandfather funnily enough was an SP bookie back in the day and my father and a sibling were into horses," he said.

"I'm not normally a race goer, but let's hope barrier 14 is the lucky barrier!"
