Now the celebrity faecal sculpture has floated to Merimbula for a special appearance.
The large sculpture that has taken up temporary residence outside the Ford Oval toilet block at Merimbula's Main Beach is on loan from Clean Ocean Foundation.
CEO of the foundation John Gemmill said through lending the local community 'The Big Poo' they hoped to make the point that treated effluent is valuable and that it needed to be harnessed for local recycling to grow the local economy.
"We are calling on Bega Shire to invest $30million on an upgrade and recycling strategy rather than an outfall pipeline," he said.
"Keeping water locally means ovals and amenities can be watered all year round. It means people can use recycled water on their gardens.
"It can be used for firefighting and to green parks mitigating heat island effects and improving air quality and value. Green communities are more valuable."
Spokesman for newly formed local community group Sustainable Water Action of Merimbula and Pambula (SWAMP) Stephen Kambouridis said the symbolism behind The Big Poo was simple.
"It's symbolic of what we are putting into our oceans and what we shouldn't be putting into our oceans," he said.
"The ocean outfall project is an outdated method of dealing with waste and the council should be looking for better strategies of reusing and recycling the water instead of dumping it into the sea."
Mr Gemmell said although the poo's appearance meant bad news, now with changing technology there's potential for the poo to be embraced as a good news story.
"Historically it's been used to highlight problems with the dumping effluent via outfalls into our precious marine environment. Today it represents an economic opportunity for councils to harness next-gen water infrastructure, reusing precious wasted water," he said.
