It is more than pleasing to see an ever-increasing number of juniors enjoying the sport.
The full moon last week has returned some great gummy shark (flake) as well as snapper off Long Point and Haycock.
Snapper and morwong respond to pilchard and squid baits as well as soft plastics and metal micro jigs.
In Merimbula Bay with temperatures now up to 17 degrees there are lots of flathead but unfortunately mostly undersize.
Best to travel off Tura Beach and Tura Headland as well as out from Kianinny to White Rock and northwards to Baronda Head.
Around 15-20 fathoms are the best depths. Unfortunately chinamen leatherjackets remain a pest.
Now is the time to get your prawning gear ready for the run at the next new moon.
Some have run already and this means that prawn-like squid jigs are the go and both flathead and reef areas are firing up.
At the Merimbula wharf the annual luderick run has begun and congratulations to Joe Battaglia for first catch of the season as well as a double hook-up. Joe has most success at dawn! Both cabbage weed and artificial weed will give good results.
Strong winds have seen patchy fishing offshore to say the least but the estuaries are now firing. Tailor are active early morning and evening.
Try slow trolling in the channel at Merimbula for both Australian salmon and tailor. In the lakes trevally are plentiful. A good starting point for dusky flathead is at Mogereeka.
Some fine whiting have also been recorded from the sand flats nearby. Metal vibe jigs, soft plastics and bait are all effective. When using bait, burley certainly helps.
Bream are a little shy, try further up the Bega River and the channel at Blackmans. Some excellent bream are reported from the Broadwater at Pambula try near the oyster leases. Pambula also sports lots of mullet which are best attached with bread burley and will take prawn bait. Good whiting have also been recorded from the sand flats.
