Speaking on Sunday as he took a tour around the Pacific Explorer, the first cruise ship to use the wharf he explained that in December 2016 he had returned from a job in WA.
"I had come home to Eden and here was a job opportunity right in my own backyard that would round out my career," Mr Vardy said.
"There were no environmental or safety issues and there was a fantastic involvement of Aboriginal people in the workforce," he said.
"It was on time, under budget and everyone co-operated so well in the construction of the wharf," Mr Vardy said.
He admitted that there were a lot of hurdles to overcome in planning but said it was a most rewarding project to work on "and so positive for the community".
Looking down from high up on the visiting Pacific Explorer, Mr Vardy was able to see his work from a new angle on Sunday morning. He pointed out that he had also been involved in the construction of the existing breakwater water back in the 80s.
