As part of NSW Seniors’ Festival 2019, U3A Sapphire Coast has put together a “Seniors’ Festival” Musical Compass of four music events throughout the shire.

U3A president, Fleur Dwyer, said that research identified that music was a powerful tonic in peoples' lives, at any age.

"Apart for the sheer joy it brings us, there are many documented benefits for our cognitive, psychological and physical well being,” Ms Dwyer said.

Research also shows that music has a therapeutic effect for seniors, as well as patients with dementia and those living with depression.

"For our last event, “Music from the South”, the wonderful jazz vocalist, Cherie Glanville, will take us on a tour of memories through her stylistic and inimitable jazz renditions with local pianist, Paul Dion. This concert seems a perfect fit for the Seniors Festival because jazz crosses the decades," Ms Dwyer said.

Cherie and Paul will be performing songs from the 20s to the 50s. Their repertoire includes hits like ‘What A Wonderful World’, ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ and ‘Sentimental Journey’.

Cherie has been singing professionally for over 20 years. Formerly from Melbourne and Canberra, she’s performed at countless Merimbula Jazz Festivals and is thrilled to finally be living in Merimbula.

U3A “Compass of Music: Music from the South” will be presented on Wednesday, March 6, 1.30-3.30 pm at Club Sapphire, Merimbula. Entry for seniors is free. Bookings essential at: u3ascevents@gmail.com.
