“I am utterly disappointed and angered that someone could do something like that to such an important part of Merimbula’s past,” Mr Browning said.
“People lost their lives to defend their country and their names are etched here in brass. It’s very hard to put into words what I feel,” he added.
Part of the back of the wall which surrounds the memorial was sprayed in bright blue paint. Mr Browning said he heard about it on Wednesday, February 13 and was now investigating how it could be cleaned.
“I am very angry; the whole community should be very disappointed in the desecration of this memorial,” he said.
“I’m now on my way to the Merimbula RSL sub-branch meeting; what terrible news I have to tell the meeting and our veterans,” Mr Browning said on Monday morning.
There was also graffiti on the nearby ramp into the lake in the same colour spray paint.
Mr Browning said he would be talking to police about the matter.
