Fishing just 34km off Merimbula, Martin and his partner Peter Haar were astounded to see 6 beautiful marlin – all lit up a brilliant electric blue – a sure sign of feeding, swimming about the boat. A good marlin was also tagged and released by Peter. We anticipate the fish should now be appearing off Eden as well as Merimbula.
Inshore there are swarms of slimy mackerel and bottom droppers are finding it hard in places to get their baits down to reef and sand for snapper and flathead. Best ocean flathead are coming from the Pinnacles area inshore of the horseshoe reef with other known areas; Tura Headland, Bournda Island and Turingal Headland are giving patchy results.
Good snapper are reported from North Head, Lennards Island and Haycock. Best time is dawn and dusk matching a turn of tide. Baits include squid and pilchards. Salmon off the beaches and headlands remain patchy with some larger fish taken off Haycock Beach. Try Merimbula Main Beach south-east of Fishpen.
Large drummer and luderick have been returned from Tura Headland and Short Point. Best time is just before high tide. At the Merimbula Fishing Platform large luderick and calamari squid are back with some large ones landed. Of note is the landing of a lovely drummer taken on artificial weed.
The Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club is gearing up for its next major event in just over a week’s time. On February 2-3 the club is running its annual Merimbula Lakeview Hotel-sponsored $2000 cash, catch and release, dusky flathead competition. This competition is open to all comers, entry through the club’s website http://www.mbglac.com.au or at the briefing at the club in Spencer Park on Friday, February 1.
Dusky flathead, bream, tailor, trevally and whiting are available both in the Merimbula Lake channel and in the Top Lake. Good tailor are prolific at Pambula Lake and there’s also reports of good whiting. The Bega River remains closed and continues to fish well at Mogareeka.
As well as its normal opening from 6.30pm this Friday, January 25, the clubhouse will also be open on Australia Day, January 26, from 4pm. Visitors are very welcome. Come and enjoy the fishing report, ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices. All enquires to Lindon Thompson on 0411 873 880.
