From a trailer to help volunteers at Panboola Wetlands, to expanding a PCYC Fit for Life program across the Bega Valley, applications for a wide range of projects were successful in receiving a grant.
The presentations to the successful groups were made on Friday afternoon, December 7, at the University of Wollongong Bega campus with representatives of the foundation and Bega Valley Shire Council present.
The Mumbulla Foundation works in partnership with the council to administer and distribute the grants, which are used “to improve the collective economic, environmental, social and cultural wellbeing of those living int he Bega Valley”.
The mission statement of the foundation, which was established in 2000, is to “Give Where You Live”.
The not-for-profit foundation raises money through donations, membership fees and a highly popular annual fundraising gala dinner. It also receives around $25,000 annually via the council, which is matched dollar for dollar to make up the pool of grant money.
All up this year there were 30 applications for grant support totalling more than $121,000. Twelve small grants (of up to $2000) and seven large ($7550 being the largest) were approved from the shortlist.
All recipients were heartily congratulated by Mumbulla Foundation chairwoman Olwen Morris, who passed along the cheques.
Each of the successful recipients were then invited to share the story of their group and plans for the money at Friday’s presentation.
There was no shortage on inspirational work being conducted right across the Bega Valley via these groups, some on as large a scale as a cultural garden project for Bermagui Preschool or a mobile kitchen and cooking school through the Sapphire Community Pantry.
Smaller scale projects still worthy of grant funding for their benefits to the wider community included a community fun day during Children’s Week being organised by Bega Valley Family Day Care, and trauma sensitive yoga classes with Flourish Australia.
There were also comments made by several recipients about how many of the community groups were intrinsically linked with each other, or had synergies that proved the community benefit at the heart of the Mumbulla Foundation’s endeavours.
Many of these projects are worthy of articles in themselves and we will bring updates on the projects to you in the weeks to come.
