Pubs are a key part of Australia’s cultural identity and act as a meeting place within our local communities.

The Bega Valley Shire is no exception, with many having a deep connection with historical pubs and hotels, but most of this information was hard to find – until now!

A project from the Australian National University (ANU) Archives has brought the history of pubs and hotels in Bega and surrounds online for the community to enjoy.

The ANU Archives has a new online exhibition showcasing the history of Tooth and Company, a significant NSW brewer, and the many hotels it owned and supplied.

Tooth and Company was a major beer-producer for 150 years, acquiring breweries and hotels throughout the state.

They include:

Bega

  • Bank Hotel
  • Bega Hotel (ex Cosmopolitan and Metropolitan Hotel)
  • Central Hotel
  • Commercial Hotel
  • Grand Hotel (ex Family Hotel)

Cobargo

  • Cobargo Hotel
  • Post Office Hotel

Bermagui

Tathra

Not to mention the countless others from our surrounding areas – Delegate Hotel even takes pride of place as the archive website’s cover image.

This exhibit is available online along with a special interactive map, providing access to valuable historical information, as well as incredible photographs. The ANU Archives has access to additional images and records on most of the hotels.

The online exhibition links to all the records located in the ANU Open Research repository, which are available for users to view and download.
