The old adage that cream always rises to the top proved correct at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club on the weekend when previous club champion Nick Crundall cruised home with a final round of 70 to become the 2018 champ by a resounding eight shots.
The B grade champ for 2018 is Don Patterson who beat a strong B grade contingent by a similar margin. Don put together four very steady rounds that proved the difference to the strong chasing posse. Even though he kept his worst until last, Mel York was too consistent in notching up a victory in C grade. It was nice to see past club captain Bruce Walker head the pile in D grade; a very solid final round secured victory for Bruce.
The October Monthly Medal was played for in conjunction with the 3rd round of the champs on Saturday and a great 67 nett allowed Ray Coutts-Smith to go home a very happy chappy. The other successful grade winners on Saturday were the ever steady Ian Murray in A grade.
Great to see Brian Smith finding some better form to lead B grade home. Nick Clarke and Geoff Uren had a ding dong battle for the D grade cash with Nick getting the nod on a countback all grade winners recording 69 netts.
Sunday saw the aforementioned Nick Crundall take the A grade daily prize with Ossie Ziviani the successful player in B grade.
The Sails Real Estate golden shots over the weekend went to Jeff Hazell and Michael Mutch with two great shots.
The ladies are halfway through their championships as this report is being compiled and very little separates the leading contenders in all grades.
Tuesday was a very pleasant day to start the event but some well overdue rain made Thursday a testing day.
Tuesday saw Robyn Davis lead the way with 69 nett and Judy Lawrence net 70 taking the B grade loot.
Thursday saw Lyn Holmes in front with a fine 70 nett with the very consistent Wendy Maxworthy net 73 leading the other grade.
The club is extremely fortunate to have Robert Smith Complete Furnishers sponsoring the Club Championships, the company have been loyal sponsors for over 40 years, what an effort.
The score of the week belonged to Bryan Hammond on Wednesday last. Forty-four stableford points generally gets the job done, bad luck this time around Bruce Walker, Hammo had a round of the year 46 points. The handicap will take a knock for you both with those great scores. David Fleming and Mike Maxworthy also scored very well but 41 and 40 points pales in significance compared to the other lads but well good enough to win a grade trophy.
Good golfing to the ladies competing in the final two rounds of the “clubbies” this week.
