NPWS Sapphire Coast Area Manager Andrew Wall said the low intensity burn will be undertaken to reduce risk of fire spreading during the bushfire season.
“The 90 hectares burn in Bournda National Park to the east of Sapphire Coast Drive, will start around 11am,” Mr Wall said.
“Smoke from this burn will be visible over a wide area including Tura Beach, Merimbula and Bournda.
“Public access to the burn area and surrounding fire trails will be closed for the duration of the burn and until the area has been assessed as safe to reopen.
“This may be two days or longer depending on conditions.
“Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and observe any warning signs or directions from fire crews and traffic controllers.
“Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed in the event of smoky conditions.
“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors,” Mr Wall said.
This Sapphire area hazard reduction program is part of the state-wide hazard reduction program undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Forests Corporation, Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
The hazard reduction program is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
