Formed in 2016 by regional careers consultant at the University of Wollongong Bega campus Samantha Morris, the network is made up of careers advisors from high schools across the Far South Coast, as well the local TAFE.
“The goal is to strengthen the connections between local industry and the careers advisors in the local schools,” Ms Morris said.
“This is the second year we’ve done this tour, and we’ve found that not only has it been really beneficial for us as career advisors in understanding what is on offer for our students, but it gives local businesses a direct connection to promote upcoming positions and traineeships they may have available.
“I teach a careers subject at the university that requires the students to complete an unpaid internship, so forging relationships such as these really helps a program like that.”
In this year’s tour, the network met with employers in both Bega and Merimbula, including Hillgrove House, Kothes Accountants and Merimbula National Parks.
“The feedback we got from the employers was really positive, as they felt that in opening more direct lines of communication, we are able to better identify students well suited to the employment opportunities they have on offer,” Ms Morris said.
The network meets every school term to discuss matters such as employment growth in the region, and are always looking for more connection with local employers.
“If you’re a local employer or business owner and have an opportunity, or would like to get involved with the network, I would really encourage you to get in touch,” Ms Morris said.
