Speaking prior to the concert by the lakeside after the parade, mayor Kristy McBain said she had watched the festival since she was a teenager and her parents had a shop in Merimbula.
“I think it is a testament to the jazz festival committee that they have been able to change and we’re seeing younger and younger people. Congratulations to the committee,” Cr McBain said.
In a reference to the sunny weather that appeared just at the right time Cr McBain said to laughter from the crowd: “We don’t have to pray in Merimbula we just flick on a switch when we know there’s something important on.”
“Don’t underestimate the value you bring into this town; we really welcome you,” Cr McBain added.
The crowds stayed around to enjoy the weather and live music around the town prior to sessions starting again in the six official jazz festival venues around town.
