Mr Buckley of Wapengo Rocks Wild Organic Oysters said he arrived at work on Saturday morning to find several of his crates floating free and an estimated 45 dozen oysters missing.
He said they were older and larger Sydney rock oysters, some destined for higher-end establishments in Sydney where they can sometimes go for $5-10 a pop.
He put their worth to him as a grower around $50 a dozen.
“Some are old, maybe eight or nine years old. It’s a bit unique to leave them growing for that long but I had the opportunity to do it and wanted to see how they went,” Mr Buckley said.
“They were left in crates out the front of the shed to have a drink. They were among other crates so it looks like they were singled out.
“It’s really disappointing.”
If anyone saw activity at Mr Buckley’s oyster leases at Wapengo on Saturday morning, likely at the low tide prior to 10am, they should call authorities to report it.
Mr Buckley also said people should be wary if approached by someone suspiciously trying to offload oysters.
