Then the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s open tournament is just a couple of weeks later on June 9-11. 

Merimbula’s fishing area is between due East of Goalen Head to the North and due East of the Southern end of Disaster Bay to the South.  

Catches of snapper have improved off our local reefs and Michael Martin’s prize winning fish, a magnificent 55cm, calculated to weigh 3.3kg, was taken drifting with squid bait at Haycock Reef just out of Merimbula.  Michael won an $800 Tackle World Merimbula voucher for this fish. 

Runner-up was Pambula angler Les Dirou with a 51.5cm fish for a $500 voucher and close behind in third place was a 51cm snapper taken by Dean Greenwell taking home a $200 voucher. 

A special cash prize of $400 sponsored by McKays Oysters for the largest bag of 5 snapper was won by Geoff McMahon and Gloria Sebley at 205.5cm – closely followed by Aidan Aitken and Josh Klimas on 204cm.

Good ocean flathead remain on the chew at the usual spots off Bithrys, White Rock, Bournda Island and Tura Headland. Good fish can also be taken off Long Point at about 24 fathoms, while ocean temps are staying mild around 17-18 degrees. 

Evening fishing at the northern end of Tura Beach near Tura Headland has seen some excellent Australian salmon catches with salted pilchards a useful bait. 

At the Merimbula fishing platform there remain some excellent Calamari squid to be taken on slow sinking jigs. 

Shore fishing the early evening can bring rewards at the Pambula River mouth with some particularly large tailor about. 

Deeper placed baits can hook up eagle rays which always give the angler a great fight before release.  

In all the estuaries dusky flathead as well as trevally, tailor and bream can be found. Soft plastics or burley and pilchards are the way to go

Some very large estuary perch have come down the Bega River to spawn and while a great angling fish must not be kept out of season.

The Club is open every Friday evening from 6.30 pm.  Visitors are very welcome.
